Mediterranean Diet
People living in the region skirting the Mediterranean Sea have a higher life
expectancy and this has been attributed to their healthier eating habits. Ancel
Keys, an American doctor after closely observing the lifestyle of people living
in this region was the first to introduce the Mediterranean diet plan in the year
1945.
The Mediterranean diet is quite easy to follow and recommends use of large
quantities of olive oil that is rich in mono unsaturated fats. The basic diet
plan involves foods like bread, fruits, vegetables, cereals, garlic, dried beans,
fish, poultry and red wine. Consumption of foods like eggs, red meat, butter,
cream etc. is restricted to keep out saturated fats that may contribute to obesity
and heart disease.
