Ornish Diet
This diet plan was introduced in 1990 by Dr. Dean Ornish M.D. through his book
called "A Program for Reversing Heart Disease" where he discusses
two different types of diets for the reversal and prevention of heart diseases.
Both the diets are primarily vegetarian diets and follow a similar guideline
that only 10% of the total calorie intake should come from fats.
All foods high in cholesterol and saturated fats need to be avoided while consumption
of caffeine, alcohol, sugar, salts is allowed but only in restricted amounts.
According to Dr. Ornish an ideal diet should consist of 10% fats, 20% proteins
and 70% carbohydrates. A high fiber diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, grains,
beans etc. is recommended. The diet also allows consumption of egg whites and
non fat dairy products and thus can be essentially classified as an ovo-lacto
vegetarian diet.
